Arizona’s hot climate is home to many engineering professionals. According to the US Bureau of Labor and Stastics, engineering in the state of Arizona grew 3.5% in May 2012. The three leading engineering professions are biomedical engineers, chemical engineers and Petroleum engineers.

Some of the larger companies in Arizona that hire IT professionals include: the State of Arizona, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Banner Health, City of Phoenix, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Maricopa County, Raytheon Co., Apollo Group Inc., JP Morgan Chase, Intel Corp., US Airways Group, U.S. Postal Service, American Express Co., Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Catholic Healthcare West, Scottsdale Healthcare and Arizona Public Service Co.

Engineering Education in Arizona

Established in 1885, the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering is one of the schools that offers engineering degrees, ranging from bachelors to doctorates. The college has ten engineering departments, including Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, and Systems and Industrial Engineering as well as the popular Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and Mining and Geological Engineering.

Other university campuses have similar engineering degrees, such as Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Electronic / Communications Engineer, and Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

Outlook for Engineering Jobs in Arizona

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), most engineering jobs will have an average rate of growth from 2010 through 2020. Arizona’s strong mining base generally has a positive effect on mining and geological occupations. Other strong areas for engineers include the rapidly growing technology-based industries, the preservation and conservation of the environment, and the increasing need for medical industry engineers.

In addition to the biomedical industry, hospitals and other care facilities will need engineers, such as health and safety engineers. The BLS reports that the majority of health and safety engineers work in the southwestern section of the state. This section of Arizona has the state’s largest cities and the majority of the state’s medical facilities.
