A degree in electrical engineering can be a great way to start this exciting career. There are 12 electrical engineering schools in Oklahoma. Seven of these schools offer Associate's degrees, and eight schools have Bachelor's degree programs. There are six Master's degree programs and three PhD programs in the state. One school also awards certificates.

The two shortest degree programs in Oklahoma are the certificate program and Associate's degree program. You need about one year to earn a certificate, and two years to earn an Associate's degree. Both of these degrees can give you a basic education in electrical engineering, in addition to helping you decide if you want to pursue a Bachelor's degree in the field.

A Bachelor's degree requires 120 credits, including credits in higher-level engineering courses. Depending on how many classes you take per semester, you may be able to graduate in four to five years. Some of the classes you take at this level include Fundamentals of Power Systems, Electromagnetic Fields, and Digital Logic Design.

If you already have a Bachelor's degree in this field, a Master's degree or PhD can open new career paths to you. A Master's degree includes 30 credits and requires about two years of full-time study. A PhD, which requires a thesis, can take between five and seven years.

The average cost of tuition in Oklahoma is $10,600. You may be able to save money by applying for scholarships. The Oklahoma Engineering Foundation is a local group that awards engineering scholarships to Oklahoma students. Oklahoma's Oil & Natural Gas Producers & Royalty Owners is another Oklahoma-based group that funds engineering scholarships.

Prior to starting work as an electrical engineer, you have to earn your license from the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors. This involves passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and sending a completed application to the board. Upon verification of your scores, you can receive your license.
