Rhode Island Biomedical Engineering Schools

People all over the country rely on biomedical engineering to help them more efficiently treat, monitor, and diagnose different types of diseases. If you have science and mathematical skills, a degree in biomedical engineering may be the next step in your career. There are two Rhode Island schools that have this program, and both schools have Bachelor’s degree programs and Master’s degree programs. The average cost of tuition is $26,400 per year. One of the benefits of attending school in Rhode Island is the small class sizes. The average Rhode Island class has only 13 students.

Getting your education in biomedical engineering requires lots of concentration, hard work, and dedication. To succeed in this field, you will need at least a Bachelor’s degree. This degree includes 120 credits of engineering courses and general education classes. You can graduate after four to five years of full-time work.

You may take a huge variety of courses as a student, starting with lower-level engineering courses and progressing to higher-level biomedical engineering courses. Required courses at this level include Medical Imaging, Biomaterials, Transport in Biological Systems, and Biomedical Design.

In addition to lecture courses, such as those listed above, you are required to take a number of lab courses. In lab courses, you learn about how different materials work alone, together, and under different conditions. You may even get the chance to design your own biomedical equipment.

You can conduct research under the supervision of a professor. Typically, you work with a team of undergraduate or graduate students. At Brown University, you can conduct research at the Brown Institute for Brain Science, the Cardiovascular Research Center, the Institute for Molecular and Nanoscale Innovation, and more.

Although there are only two biomedical engineering schools in Rhode Island, tuition rates still differ widely depending on which school you choose. To get a complete picture of how much it costs to attend a school, look into financial aid as well. The University of Rhode Island is the more affordable option. Tuition is $10,878 per year for residents and $26,444 per year for non-residents. Tuition at Brown University is much more expensive. Non-residents and residents both pay $44,608 per year.

You can apply for scholarships to save money on your educational costs. The Rhode Island Consulting Engineers group funds scholarships for engineering students. The Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers also awards scholarships of $1,000 to local engineering students.

The final step you have to complete before you begin your career is getting your engineering license from the State of Rhode Island Board for Design Professionals. When you submit your completed application, be sure to include a $150 check to cover your exam fee. You can then take the Engineering Principles & Practice exam. Upon passing this exam, you receive your license.

Your education doesn’t stop once you get your engineering license! In fact, you are expected to keep up with your education throughout the duration of your career. You can join the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers to learn more about continuing education classes and professional development events.
