South Carolina Civil Engineering Schools

There are different types of civil engineering opportunities that you can choose from in South Carolina. They are Environmental which addresses issues such as improving the quality of the air, water and soil; Geotechnical which is focused on the soil, rock and engineering geo materials; Structural which addresses the areas of structural mechanics, analysis and design as well as testing the structures and materials used in the transportation systems; and Water Resources which applies to the study and modeling of natural and industrial flows such as management of rivers and dams.

There are eleven accredited civil engineering schools spread throughout the state of South Carolina in which you can obtain the required skills needed to succeed. After completion of a civil engineering program at an accredited college, the graduating students will be able to demonstrate their ability to complete the criteria required by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The criteria include the application of knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, calculus-based physics, as well as chemistry.

After completion of the civil engineering programs students will:

  • be able to identify and solve engineering problems
  • be able to analyze and interpret data
  • design a system or process to meet the requested results
  • communicate effectively
  • understand the important of ethical responsibility
  • know the importance of continuing education

The program also includes the basic concepts of leadership, management, business and public policy.

Due to the expertise requirements of this field, it is important that you obtain a professional license to be an engineer. To apply for a professional engineer license, you will need to apply with the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. The Board provides the registration forms, and they must be completed with sworn answers that show your education and detailed technical work history and provide the names for five references that have personal knowledge of your engineering experience.
