Washington DC Automotive Engineering Schools

The vibrant capital of Washington DC has two schools with automotive engineering programs. The average cost of tuition is $34,500 per year. Both of these schools offer four-degree options: Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and Ph.D.

To prepare for a new career in automotive engineering, you should complete at least a Bachelor’s degree in the field. You may be able to complete a Bachelor’s degree in four to five years, earning 120 credits in courses like Vehicle Lightweight Design, Methods for Vehicle Testing, and Alternate Fuel Systems.

Most courses require lab hours, to the tune of about 10 hours per week each semester. These hours are some of the most valuable in your education. They give you the practical skills that are required of a working automotive engineer.

Post-graduate degrees are ideal for people that want to work in the research aspect of the engineering field. You can typically earn a Master’s degree in two years or a Ph.D. in seven years. These degrees require courses like Vehicle Dynamics, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Battery Systems & Control.

Evaluating each school’s tuition rates and financial aid opportunities can help you make a school choice that you’re comfortable with. The Catholic University of America charges $19,850 per semester for engineering students. George Washington University has slightly higher tuition rates. Tuition is $48,700 per year.

As a Washington D.C. resident, you can apply for a variety of nationwide and school-specific scholarships to help you pay for tuition and books. Consider applying for the American Council of Engineering Companies Scholarship, which is worth up to $10,000.

Although Washington DC is not a state, it is still bound by local engineering licensing requirements. All licensing goes through the District of Columbia Board of Professional Engineering. You must first apply to take the NCEES exam, pass the Principles & Practice of Engineering exam, and then receive your license.

One of the largest engineering organizations in Washington DC is the District of Columbia Society of Professional Engineers. As a member, you can attend educational seminars and network with other engineers.

O*Net reports that most automotive engineers in this area earn between $56,200 and $120,900 per year, with an average annual salary of $92,000.
