Civil Engineering, being a diverse field, offers students many specialties such as construction engineering, environmental engineering, geomatics engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and hydraulic and hydrologic engineering.

Licensing is a fundamental part of a civil engineer’s career in Indiana. Senior undergraduate students enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program in a college or university in Indiana may take the Engineering In Training / Fundamentals of Engineering exam prior to graduation. That is the first step in becoming a licensed civil engineer in Indiana. After completing four years of experience in the field, civil engineers are eligible to apply for the civil engineering professional exam. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency is in charge of administering the exam. Exams are offered twice a year, in April and October.

Civil engineers in Indiana work in several capacities. They are employed in both the private and public sector. The Indiana Department of Transportation hires civil engineers to work in design, road and bridge construction, as well as aviation. Civil engineers in Indiana are also employed by local private and public agencies. They are responsible for design of very subdivision and structures, water and soil remediation, as well as water quality management.
The average starting salary for Civil engineers in Indiana is over $60,000. Mid and higher level civil engineers in the state of Indiana earn in the range of $80,000-$100,000.
