Engineering Education in New Mexico
Engineering encompasses several different economic sectors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), fields like civil, industrial, manufacturing, agricultural, electrical, and biomedical are common fields in the engineering sector.
In New Mexico, students can enroll in certificate or associate’s programs at eighteen community, technical, and primarily associate degree-granting institutions for engineering. At the bachelor’s level, students can attend the two major state universities of New Mexico for engineering: the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
In addition, there are five other public universities with undergraduate engineering programs: Eastern New Mexico University, Navajo Technical College, New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and Northern New Mexico College. The University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and Northern New Mexico College provide graduate programs in engineering.
Outlook for Engineering Jobs in New Mexico
Since the engineering sector consists of many different specialties, like civil or biomedical, career trends and salaries vary. In total, the BLS states that there are 20,160 engineers employed in New Mexico as of May 2011. The average annual salary of these engineers calculated to $79,250.
For one engineering occupation, the BLS reports that there are 1,590 civil engineers who earn an average annual salary of $81,550. In contrast, there are 180 petroleum engineers who earn an average annual salary of $97,030. One other example are industrial engineers, which make an average annual salary of $89,490 with 670 employed in New Mexico.
