If you want to become a computer engineer, you can start by attending an engineering school in Tennessee. There are seven schools that can help you reach your goal. Two schools offer Associate's degree programs and six schools have Bachelor's degree programs. There are six schools in Tennessee with Master's degree and PhD programs.

Each type of degree offers a different educational experience. An Associate's degree takes the least amount of time; you complete 60 credits in about two years. The next step up is a Bachelor's degree, which is required for licensure as an engineer. A Bachelor's degree takes approximately four years to complete, since you have to earn 120 credits. Some of the courses you may take as an undergraduate student include Introduction to Data Structures, Operating Systems, and Assembly Language.

Earning a higher-level degree can help you if you want to research or teach computer engineering. A Master's degree, which requires 30 credits, takes a minimum of two years to complete. A PhD, which requires a thesis, takes an average of seven years. Advanced courses you may take at this level include Parallel Computer Architecture, Advanced Coding Theory, and Microprocessor Design.

Tuition costs differ significantly between schools, although Tennessee does tend to be a very affordable state for students. The average cost of tuition in Tennessee is $9700. By applying for scholarships and grants, you might be able to save money on your education.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee awards scholarships to selected students every school year. The Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners also awards scholarships on an annual basis, ranging in value from $2000 to $4000.

After you have graduated from your engineering program, you can apply for your license through the Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners. Before you are awarded your license, you must pass the NCEES-administered Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Then, you can fill out your application and send it to the board. As soon as you receive your license in the mail, you can begin working.
